So what exactly is garage music?
UK garage, abbreviated as UKG, is a genre of electronic music which originated in England in the early to mid-1990s. The genre blends styles such as garage house, R&B, jungle and dance-pop.
What is the difference between house and garage nation music?
House is a little rougher around the edges and garage is a slicker slightly more soulful sound, although the line between soulful house and garage is not quite clear.
What’s the difference between grime and garage nation?
There are a few differences but fundamentally: Grime is usually 140 BPM, while garage is usually 130 BPM, hence grime’s very quick spitting.
Who started UK garage?
UK garage emerged as a genre in the mid-’90s, but to understand where it came from we need to go back to ’70s New York, where a young Larry Levan got his first big break as a DJ and secured a residency at the new Paradise Garage club. In much the same way as the music played at the Warehouse in Chicago was referred to as ‘Warehouse music’ and then house, the mixture of soul, disco and rock that Levan span at the club became known informally as ‘Garage music’.
UKG is back in the ascendant, but this isn’t just a nostalgic re-rewind. We meet the new-school names blending funky, bassline and two-step – and bringing a bit of sweetness back to the rave. Everybody loves the bubbling sunshine sounds of a classic garage tune dropped neatly into the middle of a DJ set.
